A study by Leocare and Discurv shows that 62% of residents in Bourgogne-Franche-Comté now view owning a car as a luxury, though 68% still see it as essential and 63% say they cannot do without it. Rising costs are a key factor: car expenses can consume up to three months of median income annually, with fuel, repairs, financing, and insurance weighing heavily. Many drivers cut back on insurance—36% reduced coverage, 19% canceled it, and 8% are considering it—while 21% have taken loans for repairs. Despite financial strain, 69% cannot imagine living without a personal vehicle in the next five years, highlighting both economic pressures and limited transport alternatives.
A Saga Car Insurance survey found that 82% of UK drivers worry about servicing costs, with 42% delaying maintenance due to financial concerns. Experts warn that skipping or postponing services can compromise safety, lower resale value, and even lead to fines if a car is deemed unroadworthy. Interim services offer a cheaper alternative, but are only a short-term safeguard. While some basic upkeep can be done at home, professionals stress the importance of regular checks to prevent hidden issues and costly repairs—especially for EVs, where neglected servicing can cause battery and software problems.
