Over 20M Americans Set to Lose Healthcare Coverage Jan. 1 After Congress Goes on Recess

30 Dec 2025

Starting January 1, about 20 million Americans may lose access to enhanced Affordable Care Act subsidies, causing premiums to double or triple for many and pricing them out of coverage. Congress is on recess until January 6, delaying any potential extension of these tax credits. Experts warn that low-income individuals, people of color, and those with pre-existing conditions will be disproportionately affected, worsening healthcare disparities. Navigators and certified counselors are recommended to help people find alternative ACA or Medicaid options. The loss of coverage could also strain the broader U.S. healthcare system, increasing costs for everyone.

HZZO raising supplementary health insurance price from February 2026

30 Dec 2025

Croatia’s Health Insurance Fund (HZZO) will increase the cost of supplementary health insurance to €180 annually (€15 per month) starting 1 February 2026, up from €111.49 (€9.29 per month). The hike, the first since 2013, is driven by rising healthcare costs, increased service usage, higher salaries, and broad inflation. The new rates will apply to both existing and new policies, while vulnerable groups will continue to receive free coverage funded by the state. HZZO says the adjustment is essential to maintain a stable and inclusive healthcare system with equal access for all insured residents.

Why Americans are facing rising health insurance costs

28 Dec 2025

Health insurance costs in the U.S. are rising due to inflation, high-cost prescription drugs like GLP-1 weight loss medications, provider consolidation, and uncertainty over federal laws and tariffs. Insurers are raising premiums to cover these increased expenses, while deductibles and co-pays are also growing, especially for individual plans on HealthCare.gov. Consolidation among hospitals and clinics allows providers to negotiate higher rates, further driving up costs. These factors are increasing the financial burden on consumers, leaving many paying more for less coverage.

Egypt to automatically enrol cash support beneficiaries in comprehensive health insurance

28 Dec 2025

Egypt will automatically enroll all citizens receiving state-approved cash and social support, such as Takaful and Karama, into the national comprehensive health insurance system. The Ministry of Social Solidarity will regularly update eligible individuals’ data to the General Authority for Universal Health Insurance. This initiative is part of broader efforts to strengthen social protection, improve subsidy efficiency, and ensure quality healthcare for vulnerable groups. The government is also digitizing the subsidy system via the Unified Government Services Card to centralize databases and expand coverage. Officials emphasized that these measures aim to provide a “decent life” for low- and middle-income citizens while improving public spending efficiency.
