Pet insurance in India: How much it really covers (and what it doesn’t)

20 Nov 2025

Pet insurance in India is becoming increasingly popular as veterinary costs rise and pets are treated like family. Most policies cover accidents and major illnesses, including fractures, infections, surgeries, hospitalisation, scans, and follow-ups, while some also include liability, theft, or loss coverage. Common exclusions are pre-existing conditions, routine and preventive care, breeding, cosmetic procedures, and a waiting period of 15–30 days. Policies often have age limits, breed restrictions, claim caps, and documentation requirements, so owners should compare multiple plans, check coverage carefully, and consider wellness add-ons if needed. Annual premiums range from around ₹2,000 for basic accident-only plans to ₹20,000 for comprehensive coverage, while coverage for older pets or euthanasia/cremation is limited.
