A new survey by CompareNI.com found that over 75% of Northern Ireland motorists do not feel safe travelling in driverless vehicles, highlighting widespread scepticism. Of 800 drivers polled, 80% expressed safety concerns, with many citing lack of control, distrust in technology, and poor road conditions as key worries. While robotaxis are already operating in the US and UK trials are set for 2027, 94% of respondents believe this rollout is too soon. Questions around liability remain, with a third of drivers saying technology providers should bear responsibility for accidents. Experts stress that insurers, manufacturers, and tech firms must work together to build public trust.

Automakers often rely on specialized external partners for engines, but most consumers remain unaware of this practice, trusting brand reputation instead. Awareness is particularly low among women, with only 11% reporting knowledge of engine origins. Experts note that while engine choice is rarely considered when buying a car, it directly affects costs such as insurance and road tax. For example, moving from an engine under 1,000cc to one between 2,000–3,000cc can raise insurance premiums by up to 57%.
