Asian Monkey Attacks Drive Up Australian Travel Insurance Claims

16 February 2026

Reports of monkey-related incidents in destinations like Thailand and Indonesia are causing a surge in travel insurance claims from Australian travellers, according to Southern Cross Travel Insurance (SCTI), which noted a 350% rise in such claims over two years. Most claims involve medical treatment for bites or scratches, while some relate to property damage, like stolen phones or glasses. High-profile events, including an attack on influencer Julia Beautx in Krabi, have spotlighted risks in wildlife tourism and the need for clear policy coverage. Insurers are reassessing risk pricing, sub-limits, and emergency assistance provisions to manage clusters of animal-related claims during peak travel seasons.

Hong Kong Travellers Face Rising Travel Insurance Disputes

16 February 2026

Rising travel from Hong Kong has exposed confusion over what travel insurance policies actually cover, according to 10Life. Common issues involve cruises, self-drive trips, and cancellation benefits, with claims often denied due to missing add-ons, documentation, or misunderstanding of policy limits. Personal belongings and baggage delays are frequently reimbursed at depreciated value, while cancellation cover is limited to specified events unless a premium option is purchased. Travellers are increasingly scrutinizing medical limits, property caps, and cancellation terms to avoid disputes.

12 February 2026

SiriusPoint’s subsidiary IMG will acquire World Nomads, a global travel insurance and lifestyle brand, expanding its reach to Australia, Brazil, and Canada and increasing gross written premiums by around $40 million. This follows IMG’s recent purchase of Assist America, creating an integrated insurance platform with presence in 34 countries and coverage across six continents. The acquisition aims to enhance IMG’s global distribution, offer 24/7 service, and strengthen its portfolio of adventure and independent traveler products. The transaction is expected to close in stages between 2026 and 2027, pending regulatory approval.
